Dale Van Pelt began studying at Purdue University in 1889 and graduated with a B.S. in Mechanics in 1892. His name appears several times in the Purdue Yearbook, the Debris from 1889 to 1892. In 1889 he participated in the Emersonian Society, singing as a low bass.
